Witches’ cauldron
Siguldas novads, Nurmižu gravas rezervāta teritorija

The Witches’ Cauldron is located north of Sigulda in the Nurmiži Ravine Reserve near the Dauda houses and the Dauda River.

Protected natural object. The Raganu kotls is part of the Gauja National Park Nurmiži Ravine Reserve, which can only be visited for scientific research purposes with a special permit from the Nature Conservation Agency.

The Raganu kotls is a huge sulphosic funnel or ravine formed by the action of various watercourses. The gorge is a semi-truncated cylinder 30 m high and 20 m wide on the valley side. The cliff faces have a maximum height of 20 metres. Its interior resembles a panorama in a geological museum, showing the folding, layering and colour changes of the rocks.

The sandstone of the Raganu kotla exposes the Gauja and Amata suites, with bands of red clay deposits and aleirolytes. At the bottom of the western edge of the Raganu kotla is a small, beautiful cave from which a small stream flows. The Witches’ Cauldron is known as the setting for the film ‘The Cage’, as evidenced by the metal cage left in the sandstone.

A small highly seasonal waterfall has formed at the upper edge of the Witches’ Cauldron. The outer edge of the cauldron is cut by a stream bed flowing down the slope, which ends in this waterfall, about 2.7 m high.

The impression of a gully is diminished by an active erosion process as well as by numerous landslides and mudslides. The largest sandstone outcrops are on both sides of the Raganu pot, while the upper part is smaller. Movement and physical impact on the rock surfaces of the cauldron is strictly prohibited.
