Mežotne Castle Hill is located on the left bank of the Lielupe River opposite Mežotne Castle. It is one of the largest fortifications of the ancient Semigallans of the 9th-13th centuries, its area is 3500m2 and its height exceeds 16 m. The area between the Mežotne castle mound and the so-called Vīna hill, covering 13 ha, was the site of an ancient town. Next to the castle mound is the Mežotne Church (not restored!) and the cemetery of the Livens family, the princes who owned Mežotne Manor. Traditionally, on the third Saturday in May, the Mežotne Castle Mound Festival is held.
The “Shining Ant Trail” with various activity opportunities was installed in the autumn of 2017. The trail is dedicated to one of the inhabitants of the castle mound – the bright ant. The trail is equipped with various wooden crawling and climbing elements, which will allow the youngest visitors of the mound to get into the “skin” of the Bright Ant and, while walking along the trail, to meet her friends – other inhabitants of the Mežotne Mound – the leaf-cutter, woodcreeper, woodpecker, woodpecker, bat, etc. In addition, information stands have been set up, where you will have the opportunity to learn about the bright ant itself, as well as about its friends and other natural values of the Mežotne Mound.
