In the Vidzeme Highlands, on the shore of Lake Pulgožņa, there is “Meņģeļi” – the houses where the Jurjāns started to farm in the beginning of the 19th century. The four Jurjāns brothers – Pēteris (1851-1900), Andrejs (1856-1922), Juris (1861-1940) and Pāvuls (1866-1948), who became the founders of Latvian music culture – were born here.
The Jurjāns Brothers Memorial Museum “Meņģeļi” was founded in 1990 in memory of the four Jurjāns brothers – musicians who were born in “Meņģeļi” in the 19th century.
The museum organises various events – “Night of Museums”, Latvian choir gatherings, a generational singing event “Man bij` dziesmu vācelīte”, Jurjāns family reunions, various exhibitions.
The territory of the museum covers 8.6 ha.
“Meņģeļi” – a museum set up in the home of the Jurjāns brothers, founders of Latvian music culture. The museum houses permanent exhibitions and displays, and offers museum education programmes to learn about Latvian antiquities.
